Freemium in the AI tools space covers at least three different business models, and conflating them leads to bad expectations.
Usage-capped freemium gives you full functionality up to a monthly limit, then cuts you off or charges overage. This is the most transparent version and the easiest to evaluate.
Feature-capped freemium gives you unlimited usage but withholds specific capabilities, like higher output resolution or longer context windows, behind a paid tier.
Quality-capped freemium is the least disclosed version: the free tier silently uses a smaller or older underlying model, so output quality itself is the thing being metered.
Before trusting a comparison chart, run the same real task through the free tier and, if possible, a trial of the paid tier. Marketing copy rarely spells out which of the three models you’re actually getting.
